A type of VPN which connects those employees or users who are travelling and need to access the information or log on to the company local area network LAN from a remote location. The connection so made is through the internet service provider (ISP).

It is a VPN used to connect the organisation's LAN for internal transfer of information or the functionality of the organisation. Intranet VPNs provide the same level of connectivity and reliability as a fully private network.

A type of VPN which allows access to external networks through which customers, suppliers and other partners can log on is called extranet based VPN. It is a tool to bring closer the suppliers and partners as well as also connects inter companies LAN.
